Understanding the Tradition
The Mexican Rosca de Reyes tradition is perhaps the one youโre most familiar with, as opposed to the somewhat different traditions from other Hispanic countries. According to The Washington Post, the Rosca is part of the Epiphany celebration, the 12th day after Christmas. This day marks the occasion when the three wise men (Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltazar) arrived to visit newborn Jesus.
Some sources state the tradition symbolizes the story of Mary and Joseph fleeing to Egypt to protect baby Jesus from King Herod. The Rosca itself symbolizes the Kingโs crown, the dried fruit symbolizes jewels, while the plastic baby symbolizes Jesus in hiding. If you find the plastic figure, youโre a symbolic godparent and must sponsor a tamalada celebration on February 2nd, or Dรญa de la Candelaria.
