Delia’s has been a beloved staple in the Rio Grande Valley for years, renowned for serving hot, delicious, and filling tamales that have captured countless fans’ hearts and taste buds. Earlier this year, we took a big step by expanding northward on HWY 281 to San Antonio, where we’ve been welcomed with open arms. Our new location marks an exciting chapter in our journey, but it’s not the first time tamales have made headlines in the area. Let’s take a nostalgic look back at “The Great Tamale Incident of 1976” and how it ties into the iconic status that Delia has achieved over the years.
The Great Tamale Incident of 1976
The 1976 presidential election was pivotal in American history, with President Gerald Ford and Governor Jimmy Carter facing off in a fiercely contested campaign. During a visit to San Antonio’s historic Alamo, Ford was offered a plate of tamales, a true Texan delicacy. In a rather amusing turn of events, he famously picked one up and took a bite without removing the corn husk, much to the shock of onlookers.
Lila Cockrell, then the Mayor of San Antonio, recounted the incident, noting, “It was obvious he didn’t get a briefing on the eating of tamales.” Fortunately, a quick-thinking member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas intervened just in time to save the President from this culinary faux pas. This humorous incident, often referred to as “The Great Tamale Incident,” became a beloved story in San Antonio lore and remains a testament to the cultural significance of tamales in Texas.
