Bringing Family Together
Evolving from the time of the Aztecs and into a Hispanic family tradition, the process of making tamales is still a time-consuming and labor-intensive activity. In the past, women would gather with family and friends to hold a “tamalada”, or tamale cooking session. These family functions gave everyone involved a chance to socialize and catch up with each other. These gatherings were held annually and recipes were passed down from generation to generation. Having family become closer during these events became just as important as the tamale-making activity itself.
Today, the value of the tamale has extended beyond the Hispanic community and is enjoyed by people all over the world. We’ve been involved in this process too! From making the masa, spreading it on the comal, inserting different fillings and then steaming them, we make all of your favorite tamales, eliminating the intensive labor and time-consuming exercise of having to make them. This leaves your family members with more time to enjoy each other’s company.
On your graduate’s special day, instead of spending an arm and a leg at an expensive restaurant, stop by and visit us! Our many flavors are sure to bring your family together to create memories that will be talked about for years!
Our Family History
At Delia’s, we understand that family is everything. It’s because of family that we’ve grown into a staple of South Texas cooking. Over 30 years ago, Delia and her sister started selling tamales door-to-door and business-to-business to provide for their families. After building a solid client base, Delia realized she’d outgrown her kitchen.
In 1998, she opened her first location in South McAllen. A second location followed in Pharr in 2003, a third in Edinburg in 2006, fourth and fifth locations in Mission and San Juan in 2008 and one in North McAllen in 2012. We’ve become a social media sensation with over 64,000 likes and full houses during lunch hour! Come by and see what everyone is talking about!
